Rebecca MacKinnon is a senior research fellow at the New America Foundation and cofounder of the international citizen media network, Global Voices Online. Her first book, Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom, was awarded the 2013 Goldsmith Book Prize by the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Rebecca earned a B.A. in Government Affairs magna cum laude from Harvard College. She was a TV reporter and served as the CNN bureau chief and correspondent in Beijing (1998-2001) and Tokyo (2001-2003). In 2004, she was a Public Policy research fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard, an Open Society Institute fellow, and a visiting fellow at Princeton University’s Center for Information Technology Policy. Rebecca is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and has taught online journalism at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism and Media Studies Centre (2007-08). She is currently working with Pennsylvania University and Internews on a Ranking Digital Rights, a project that seeks to rate and compare how well the world’s leading Internet companies uphold free expression and privacy rights.
